Physics 111 Fall 2017 Textbook Information

You will need three items for this course:

  1. The main text is College Physics: A Strategic Approach Technology Update Plus MasteringPhysics with eText -- Access Card Package, 3rd Edition by Randall D. Knight, Brian Jones, and Stuart Field. This includes an online homework component MasteringPhysics. You can purchase this as a single package at the bookstore.

An online-only version of the text (eText) bundled with MasteringPhysics is also available.

At the publisher's website, there are a variety of different packages available, including both digital and loose-leaf unbound versions. If you are only taking Phys 111, and not planning on continuing to take Phys 112, then Volume 1 of the text will be sufficient.

If you are considering buying a used text or a text from another source, be aware that you still will need to buy the online homework part. You can buy that directly from MasteringPhysics. Please also be aware that the online card by itself is rather expensive ($68.95 in Fall 2016 for two semesters), and you may end up paying more for the combination than if you simpy purchased the standard package through the bookstore.

You will likely find a confusing array of ISBN numbers that refer to different packagings of the text with various optional components. The only required parts are the text itself (3rd edition) and the on-line homework component. The ISBN numbers we are using are (you can refer to either one. They both refer to the same package):

  2. You will also need the Physics 111 Laboratory Manual 2017, available in the bookstore.
  3. Finally, you will need a bound laboratory notebook. A suitable notebook will also be available in the bookstore, but you may wish to wait until the first week of class to purchase that. (You will work in pairs in lab. Each lab pair will be required to have a bound notebook. We will form lab pairs in the first week of class.)
