Physics 131 Spring 2026 Textbook Information

You will need three items for this course: the textbook, the on-line component, and the lab manual.

Text and Online Component

First Day Inclusive Access

This class will be participating in the First Day® inclusive access program. The materials for the lecture portion of this course will be available in digital format through Moodle. Charges for the accessible content are added to the cost of the course upon registration. To access your materials, use the “Course Materials” link on the Moodle course site.

You will have the option to opt out of using the FirstDay inclusive access materials should you wish to purchase the materials another way. The option to opt-out will be available until the last day of the add/drop period. To opt-out, select the large green [Opt Out] button when accessing the FirstDay inclusive access materials. If you opt-out, you will be credited after the add/drop period.

If you have questions about the First Day Inclusive Access Program or experience any issues, please email inclusive-access.group@lafayette.edu.

Purchasing on your Own

The textbook is University Physics with Modern Physics, 15th edition by Hugh D. Young and Roger A Freedman. The on-line component is Modified Mastering Physics. The on-line component includes an e-text. If you would like a printed version, the textbook is the same one that has been used for the past several years at Lafayette in Phys 131/133/151/152, so used copies may be available. Alternatively, you can buy or rent a printed version online.

At the publisher's website, you can find various bundles, depending on whether you want a printed copy of the text in addition to the e-text, and whether you will be taking one semester or two semesters. Shortly before classes start, you will also be able to purchase, activate, and access your account from our Moodle site. Click on the 'Mastering Physics' link to get started.

Wherever you purchase your materials, be sure to follow the instructions for registering through our Moodle site. You do not need a Course ID. When you register through our Moodle site, you will automatically be registered for the correct course.

If you are considering buying a used text or a text from another source, be aware that you still will need to buy the on-line Modified Mastering part. You will likely find a confusing array of ISBN numbers that refer to different packages of the text with various optional components. The only required parts are the text itself (15th edition) and the on-line Modified Mastering component.

Lab Materials

The lab manual will be available from the Lafayette bookstore.
