Physics 335—Thermal Physics
Homework Assignment #3
Due Wednesday, September 16, 2026, 9:30 a.m.
Problems 2.17, 2.19, 2.24, 2.29, 2.30, 2.34, and 2.42. (20 pts. each).
Hints: Problem 2.24 can be rather long; follow the analgous calculation in the text to give you some guidance for how to proceed.
For Problem 2.30, you should just use the results of Problem 2.22. You do not need to re-derive them.
For problem 2.42 part (a), you merely need to show that the suggested combination has the correct units. In part (d), you might find it interesting to note that in Problem 2.36 (which is not assigned), the entropy of the sun is estimated to be on the order of 1 × 1035 J∕K. Your result here for a black hole ought to be much larger than that.
